The Show of his Life

After his successes in the one-man plays The Double Bass and Sky, Henri devised and wrote this one himself, based on his own life.

I'm Not a Dentist takes us on a remarkable journey, from his birth in a World War II refugee camp in SwitzerlandProduction shot from Dentist to his position of eminence in the Australian theatre.

It is in two acts. The first goes from his birth, via foster homes and orphanages, to the point of entering showbusiness in Australia.

The second describes his early career in Australia and in England, and ends with his return to Australia 24 years ago - poised to produce the volume of work for which he is known here.

The result is a rare insight into the creation and survival of an actor. It is a migrant story and a showbusiness story giving it universal appeal; and when performed abroad it will give an insight into the mix of people who actually make up Australian society. The sophistication, humour and multiculturalism of real Australia emerge implicitly in this riveting performance by one of the country's most consumate actors.

I'm Not a Dentist was born on 15/10/1995 at the Hakoah Club in Bondi, Sydney; it had several exposures prior to its four week running-in season at the Effie Crump Theatre (true name!) in Perth, and then its official world première at the Ensemble Theatre, Sydney on 9/1/1997. This lead to a sell-out season in that theatre followed by a national tour in 1998 covering 70 towns in 14 weeks across five states. It played to record houses and received wonderful responses.
